mother to son

Every mother wants her child to succeed. Demonstration of love and encouragement a mother shows to her offspring is expressed in this poem. Life is rough, full of suprises, ups and downs, but we are taught to take chances and to understand that it is not always easy. The mother clearly has suffered in her life and he incorporates a mother's wise words into the poem to her son. This is an inspirational poem for those who have struggled and can relate to a mother/ son or mother/daughter relationship.

  1. Yes, and in a journal you'd want to point out how both the style of the poem--written in dialiect--and the particulars of the "stair," deployed as an extended metaphor for a life's experiences, place the speaker in a particular socio-ceonomic context (notice the opening details of the stair--what type of stairway is this? where would you find it? in what sort of building/neighborhood?); you'd also want to say something about the contrasting images of stairs, what the different metaphors represent, and the fact that the image of the "crystal stair" opens and closes the poem, though very little is said about it beyond those opening and closing images; between those is life's "real" stair...so, in short, as always, bear down on the detail...
